Bio

Hennessey is the creation of singer-songwriter Leah Hennessey and multidisciplinary electronic artist E.J. O’Hara. They are that unicorn of underground pop: a new danceable sound with exquisite lyrics.

While still a relatively new band, Hennessey has built up a devoted following from their explosive and theatrical live shows (which have continued and evolved in the virtual sphere). Their latest single, a sinister dance punk cover of The Waterboys “We Will Not Be Lovers”, captures the chaotic glamour of their live energy and pays homage to one of their most beloved under appreciated bands. The frenzied guitars of Malachy O’Neil (an official, although long-distance member of the band) may start off New York angular funk but explode into an ecstatic almost Madchester dervish. Leah’s vocals, at first sexy, androgynous and laid back, rise to histrionic screams and gasps as she loses her cool and stands revealed as the new voice of what can only be called rock and roll.

Their debut EP, produced by Jesse Malin and Diane Gentile, will be released late this summer on Velvet Elk Records.

Press

“Leah Hennessey’s work is the most rigorous dreamscape you’ll ever enter— world-bending and building that combines the precise absurdity of a 19th-century dandy with the eager sincerity of adolescent fantasy. ” – Cultured Magazine

“Living among the retro-obsessed scene of Avenue A in the East Village, Hennessey comes as more of a rebirth than a rehash of New York bands before them”- V Magazine

“Hennessey is refreshingly, unabashedly intellectual, with that same zeal for cultural regurgitation that their artistic idols employed. They certainly learned from the best.” – PostPunk.com

“Hennessey’s back like old Manhattan synth-pop never left.” – Alt Citizen
