About the Album

“Let’s Pretend (its the 80s)” is a tongue in cheek celebration of our obsession with NYC in the 80s, and the culture of decadence, consumerism and individualism it spawned. The song suggests that to fetishize the downtown cool of No Wave and the underground art scene and to constantly reimagine the glossy New Wave dreams of Nagel girls and 80s glam is an escapist fantasy for a generation doomed to debt and downward mobility. But, the song ecstatically concludes, getting dressed up and dancing “like we’ve got money” may be a realer escape than the pursuit of actual money.

Reviews

“dance/electronic punk that’s grounded in vintage pop…Leah Hennessey’s lyrics are clever.” – V Magazine

“a song so catchy, most people probably don’t listen to the lyrics — but they should. Brimming with Talking Heads-like guitar work and scaled back synth that are deftly interwoven, yet feel minimalistic in comparison to principal songwriter (and band namesake) Leah Hennessey’s larger-than-life vocal performance.” – The Deli Magazine

“Leah Hennessey has done and seems to constantly be doing it all. Playwriting, acting in said written plays, being generally just pretty informed and informative of how to be relevant in a perpetually Manhattan way…Clever but also embarrassingly sincere.” –  Altcitizen.com

“(Let’s Pretend) It’s the 80s” is a new wave-infused bop, brimming with Talking Heads-like guitar work and scaled back synth that are deftly interwoven. A brutally clever ear worm.” –Deli Magazine NYC
